Body fat refers to the amount of fat tissue present in your body compared to other tissues, such as muscles, bones, and organs. It is often expressed as a percentage of total body weight and can be classified into two main types:

1. Essential Fat

  • Definition: Fat that is necessary for normal physiological function.

  • Purpose: Protects organs, regulates body temperature, and is involved in hormone production.

  • Percentage:

    • Men: ~2–5% of body weight

    • Women: ~10–13% of body weight (higher due to childbearing needs)

2. Storage Fat

  • Definition: Fat stored in adipose tissue beneath the skin (subcutaneous fat) and around internal organs (visceral fat).

  • Purpose: Serves as an energy reserve and provides cushioning and insulation.

There are many methods of calculating your body fat percentage such as Calipers, Bio Electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), DEXA Scan, Hydrostatic Weighting. We have incorporated U.S. Navy Body Fat Formula on our platform for estimating fat percentage. It is a widely used and straightforward method for approximating body fat without requiring specialized equipment.

NOTE: For a more accurate assessment of your body fat percentage, we recommend visiting local facilities equipped with advanced tools and methods. These facilities can provide precise measurements using techniques such as DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing, or bioelectrical impedance analysis. Our method is based on established equations designed to offer an approximate estimation for your convenience.
